He was an answer to her young adult prayer. It was instant love, an out of the ball park over the fence situation the night she and her cousin, her best friend, attended a ballroom dance. Father was there with his cousin too. From their meeting that night came many dates and the marriage of the young couple.
After their wedding Father took Mother on a wonderful honeymoon to a national park. They came home and faced the crash of the stock market and beginning of the Great Depression. Nevertheless, they struggled on. Dad was a farmer and loved working the land. Eventually he supplemented his income with a job on the state roads driving heavy equipment.
They both had a sense of humor which showed up often. Mother rarely worked on the farm. She was usually in the home with the babies. One day, she saw cows roaming in her garden. She quickly ran out and shooed them off the property onto the road. Dad came home and asked, “Why are all the cows out in the road?”
“I didn’t know they were our cows!” she said.
We knew Mother loved Dad. Each afternoon at four o’clock, Mother had the table set and dinner ready. Just before Dad came in the door, she took her apron off, went into the bathroom, took out her curlers, powdered her nose, and put on some lipstick ready for the “love of her life,” to arrive. .
