Along with learning to walk and talk a child can learn that there are chores he can and must do. Learning to do chores is preparation for providing a living for yourself and a family. In early America, the responsibility of a four-year-old child was to keep the baby away from the fireplace. I was raised on a farm and early in life worked along the side of my older brother hoeing long rows of potatoes and sugar beets. The chore I hated the most was cleaning the chicken coop. Mother said, “If we don’t keep the chicken coop clean the chickens will not lay eggs.” Although it was cold and there was snow on the ground my brother and I cleaned the chicken coop. The picture is of one of my sons, learning to rinse off a dish. He chose to climb on top of the counter and I captured this photograph. Work makes one happy and gives a feeling of self-esteem.
