Grand Mothering

"I need a big Grandmother to go first!" . . . S. C. Bauman

My husband and I had difficulty getting any children so looking forward to being a Grandmother did not enter my mind until many years had passed and then, suddenly it happened. Shortly after the arrival of our first grandchild, because of economic conditions, we moved far away and were robbed of a relationship as Grandparents for a season. Then, to our delight we did get more grandchildren, even having them live with us a short time. Hide and seek had always been a favorite at our house. It was the prize for picking up toys and getting ready for bed. One night after a busy day and a messy house, I said, “Let’s pick up and then we can play Hide and Seek!” Eagerly the children and grandchildren picked up and we turned the lights down low. While playing hide and seek with my children I had once been scared so badly I nearly fainted, so I asked my four-year-old granddaughter to go into an unlit room first. She opened the door, looked inside the dark room, turned around looked up at me with her big brown eyes and said, “I need a big Grandmother to go first.” It melted my heart and of course I entered the room first. Someone said, “Being a Grandparent is the best of life’s callings, you have the delight of enjoying children, spoiling them, then send them home to their parents. It is a fun truth and don’t we all need a big Grandmother to go first!
