"There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind." - C. S. Lewis
New Year’s Day is a holiday that can be celebrated in family fun from the youngest to the oldest. When I was young, we did not go out to eat often but on New Year’s Day my father found a beautiful lodge in the mountains that served a delicious fried chicken dinner to the delight and joy of all the family. We did not ski but we did ride the ski lift to the top of a snowy mountain and back. Looking out over the landscape of snow covered mountains is still a beautiful memory. We did go sleigh riding and on this particular New Year’s Day we took our sleighs, hooked them with a rope to the back of the car, yelled and screamed as we weaved back and forth across the road.
We also made a habit of making New Year’s resolutions. Perhaps it was to share a smile more with people. We were told they cost nothing and give lots. Perhaps it was to exercise which makes the endorphins move and creates happy ripples through the body. Maybe it was to read a book or learn to forgive, enjoy the ride, whatever we chose, the resolution was written on a piece of paper, put in a jar sometimes and kept until the next New Year’s Day. I love New Year’s!
