“The family is one of nature’s masterpieces!” -Old Chinese Proverb
What a joy to be blessed with Aunts and Uncles. Some were country folks and some were from the city. They always made me feel special. Every fall with the approach of school we waited in great anticipation for the arrival of a box of clothes from California, sent to us by our Aunt who dressed her children as if they came out of a fashion magazine. I was especially excited the year I began Junior High School and because of my Aunt, I felt in style.
I remember going to the home of another Aunt filled with beautiful smells, flowers, and lovely furnishings. She taught my cousin and I about being a lady and walking like a lady. We practiced walking with books on top of our heads. She took my sisters and I to a park nearby for crafts and we played on the slides and swings. She was a seamstress like my mother and one day when I was chosen to be the May Day Queen. It was my Aunt who provided the beautiful blue dress to wear with ruffles on the sleeves and bottom of my first long dress. I felt like a Queen. This same Aunt walked to my home, after I was married, and during a time of adversity gave me hope that the clouds would lift bringing sunshine into my life.
I do not remember a lot of interaction with Uncles, except that they seemed tall, good looking, with smiles on the faces, and liked to tease us children.
