“You children haven’t been around enough. These cookies are getting old.” - Grandmother
Grandmother was wise as well as beautiful. She was an elegant lady in manner and dress. When she came to our house, she sat straight and tall and always seemed to have a smile on her face. Like Grandmother in the book, “Meet Caroline - 1812 An American Girl by Kathleen Ernst.” she was brave. She left her home in Belgium to come to America with Grandpa when just sixteen years old. I wrote the following about her kitchen because it was such a charming place to visit: “The long window faced the east and lighted up the room with sunshine that glowed off the furniture. Everything in Grandmother’s kitchen seemed to radiate the light from the window. We liked to sit on the north side and watch the dust particles dance in the sunbeams. They gave a white satin affect to Grandmother’s cupboard; we would rub our hands across the paint and feel the texture of the cupboard.
The drawers of the cupboard were filled with fresh-smelling linens and odd things that we would try to catch a glimpse of as we lingered while opening the drawer to obtain the tablecloth.
A gold Dutch girl with a rounded pumpkin-like skirt was the main attraction; this was Grandmother’s cookie jar. Her cookies were not common everyday cookies like the peanut butter and raisin cookies ... Grandmother would say, “You children haven’t been around enough. These cookies are getting old.” That would make us feel as if Grandmother really wanted to see us more often.
