Written and illustrated by Shirley Hughes
As stated on PW Best Books website the review states: Hughs offers readers her usual clear-eyed view of childhood in this 64-page collection of stories. It's a leisurely visit with siblings Alfie and baby Annie Rose; he teaches her to feed herself, and she rewards him cruelly: the very first name she learns to say is that of his friend Bernard. The children know all the people up and down their street, and theirs is a friendly world--when a neighbor, Mrs. McNally, gives Alfie a hat he in turn offers it to the milkman on a rainy day. Light, unrhymed poems punctuate the stories about this school-age boy and his toddler sister. Fans of the other Alfie books and those meeting the family for the first time will be pleased by the real-life situations, jauntily depicted in Hughes's fresh-faced watercolors.
MY REVIEW: This five star book tells the story of a brother and his sister in a charming way as they interact in a family situation. Hughs captures the fun of children as Alfie helps his sister learn to eat, visits with Grandmother who shares pictures of Alfie’s parents and her funny brother. Other stories deal with his sister’s love for his best friend, the milkman that comes every day and a special hat. The final story is about a bride who invites Alfie to be her page and the reaction of his sister. Don’t miss this charming book showing the interaction of a brother and his little sister. I wanted to share it with my entire family, because of the delightful story and beautiful illustrations.
